Beginning with our 30th anniversary in 2008, the Inn began naming guest rooms after influential American culinary figures who have significantly contributed to the evolution of American cuisine. These dedications pay tribute to individuals whose careers have intersected with the Inn and continue to inspire its culinary journey.

Charlie Trotter

Charlie Trotter was a pioneering American chef and restaurateur who significantly influenced modern American cuisine. Born in Wilmette, Illinois, he developed a passion for cooking during his college years at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he earned a degree in political science. After refining his culinary skills through various apprenticeships and studies, Trotter opened his eponymous restaurant, Charlie Trotter's, in Chicago in 1987. The restaurant quickly gained acclaim for its innovative tasting menus and commitment to seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, earning multiple Michelin stars and James Beard Awards. Beyond his restaurant, Trotter authored several cookbooks and hosted the PBS cooking show "The Kitchen Sessions with Charlie Trotter." He was also known for his philanthropic efforts, particularly in culinary education. Trotter passed away in 2013, but his legacy endures through the many chefs he mentored and the lasting impact he had on the culinary world.
